In everyday school life, many things run the same way: all children work on the same tasks at the same time and are expected to progress at roughly the same pace. This seems logical \u2013 and above all, well organized.<\/p>\n
In practice, however, it quickly becomes apparent that children are different. Some finish quickly and wait, while others need more time to truly understand things and then fall behind. And yet, the pace remains the same for everyone.<\/p>\n
This refers to an approach where all children work on the same content at the same time, regardless of how quickly they learn or what foundation they are currently building on.<\/p>\n
This makes lessons predictable. You maintain an overview and can also manage large groups.<\/p>\n
At the same time, this approach is based on a key assumption: that all children learn essentially the same way.<\/p>\n
And that's precisely what isn't true in reality.<\/p>\n
A shared learning plan provides structure. Children know what to expect, and content builds on itself. This model therefore seems like the most obvious solution, especially in larger classes.<\/p>\n
But what looks clear on the outside is often, above all, one thing: e<\/strong>Easy to organize, but not necessarily suitable for every child.<\/strong><\/p>\n Some students grasp new content faster and would be able to move on to the next learning step sooner.<\/p>\n If these students remain bound to the same pace, a structural problem arises: learning time is no longer used for development, but for waiting.<\/p>\n Die Folge ist nicht nur sinkende Motivation, sondern auch ein Verlust an kognitiver Aktivierung. Inhalte werden zwar bearbeitet, aber fordern nicht mehr heraus.<\/p>\n Another part of the students needs more time to grasp content and understand it sustainably.<\/p>\n If the instruction nevertheless proceeds at the given pace, a permanent backlog will arise. Gaps in understanding will not be closed, but will be carried over into the next topic areas.<\/p>\n In the long run, this leads less to learning progress and more to uncertainty and increasing pressure to meet requirements without having the necessary foundation.<\/p>\n These dynamics do not stop at the level of academic performance; they have a direct impact on students\u2019 self-image.<\/p>\n Children develop a picture of their own abilities over time \u2013 not just based on what they can do, but primarily in comparison to the required pace.<\/p>\n Those who are constantly playing catch-up increasingly doubt their own abilities. Those who are underchallenged often develop a low willingness to exert effort.<\/p>\n Learning thus loses its true purpose: development. Instead, it is perceived as a situation in which one is being evaluated.<\/p>\n Children need structure. That's why clear routines, orientation, and a common learning foundation are important. But learning doesn't work if everyone has to stay at the same pace all the time.<\/p>\n Children develop differently \u2013 but lessons often act as if that's not the case. The real challenge is not \u201estructure or individuality,\u201c but how both work together.<\/p>\n This means in concrete terms: Students learn together, but not always at exactly the same pace. Some move ahead more quickly and receive advanced tasks, while others need more time or a different explanation.<\/p>\n And it is precisely to this that teaching must actively respond.<\/p>\n In the traditional system, one subject often decides everything. Those who don't keep up are held back.<\/p>\n At THS, we deliberately take a different approach: If a student needs more time in a particular subject, it doesn't mean they are behind overall.
