What is the GED?
The GED® (General Educational Development Test) is an officially recognized school-leaving qualification from the USA, equivalent to a high school diploma. It was originally developed for adults, but today it is also a popular option worldwide for young people to obtain a school-leaving qualification in a flexible and practical way.
What does the GED include?
The exam consists of four core areas that assess fundamental competencies:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (Reading, Writing, and Language Comprehension)
- Mathematical Reasoning (Mathematical Thinking and Problem Solving)
- Social Studies (Civics, History, Politics, Geography)
- Science (Natural Sciences, Environment, Technology)
This is not just about pure factual knowledge, but primarily about understanding content, thinking logically, and applying knowledge practically.
Who is the GED for?
The GED is particularly attractive to adolescents and young adults looking for a flexible alternative to traditional high school diplomas. This is especially true for:
- Homeschooling families who need an accredited degree
- Emigrant families who want to use international educational paths
- Adult learners who wish to complete their education later in life
- Individuals planning to study or train abroad
What opportunities does the GED offer?
With the GED, you possess a diploma that allows you to access further education, training, and employment in many countries, especially in English-speaking regions. It is recognized in the USA, Canada, and other countries and is accepted by many universities, vocational schools, and employers.
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the GED is not a full substitute for the Abitur, but it offers a meaningful alternative, especially for international educational paths.
